The Trials of At-Home Workouts

As most of you know, I workout primarily in my garage. I have almost everything you need for CrossFit (I’m lacking rings and a rope). That being said, working out by yourself is a challenge — especially if you are doing at-home workouts for a CrossFit competition.

THE TURKEY CHALLENGE CROSSFIT COMPETITION 2021

The Turkey Challenge is coming up next weekend in Broomfield, Colorado. It will be held at MBS CrossFit, which is supposedly as pristine of a location as you can get. I’m excited to see it.

The Turkey Challenge is usually a two-day CrossFit competition. However, due to COVID-19, Day 1 has been pushed to at-home. The challenge of working out at-home or doing the CrossFit workouts at your gym is that you are not pushed. You really have no one to work off of, so you’re on your own.

For me, the challenge was WODProof, an app that you can use to record your CrossFit workouts. It has a clock built-in and a community. However, filming yourself doing a CrossFit workout in your garage is not as easy as it sounds. I had to bribe my daughter with Starbucks right after, and it took me 30 minutes just to test the app to be sure it would work (the last thing I wanted was to have to do the CrossFit workouts again).

THE CROSSFIT WORKOUTS FOR TURKEY CHALLENGE

We had three CrossFit workouts, all in a row, with a running clock of 30 minutes. They programmed it for a 14-min AMRAP (8 alternating dumbbell hang snatches, 10 dumbbell box stepovers, and 12 wall balls) with a max power clean in the minute followed by a 7-min AMRAP of bar-facing burpees.

All around, it sucked. It wasn’t hard; logistically, it just sucked.

I did okay. You can watch the video and be the judge. Let me know in the comments, and subscribe to my YouTube channel!

Do Things Others Won’t Do

Let’s be frank, those who do things that others won’t do are the winners in this world. Or, at least the winners with themselves.

When you think back on all the famous inventors and innovators in this world, what did they all have in common? An insane work ethic. A desire to never give up. An insatiable desire to succeed and to not stop until it happens.

During the coronavirus and every day God grants breath in your body, you have to be willing to do the things no one else will. You have to be willing to workout by yourself at home with no one there to push but yourself. You have to be willing to get up out of bed and face the doldrums of your life right now. You have to be willing to work harder than your colleagues so you don’t get laid off.

Not only do you have to have the will, but you have to do it. Every day. Every time. Every way. No matter what.

Only then will you have peace with yourself in what you can truly accomplish and will you accomplish your dreams.

I Feel Alive Working Out

In these days of the coronavirus where you are stuck inside all day long with nothing to do and nowhere to go, it’s hard to feel alive. You are physically breathing, but are you living? Not when you can’t go and do the things you want to do.

The only thing making me feel alive is when I work out. When my heart starts pumping and I do the things others won’t do. When my body moves like it was designed to do. When it’s hard. Only then do I feel alive.

You Can Stay Fit With Just Dumbbells

With the coronavirus causing the world to pause, many people have embarked upon at-home workouts with just minimal equipment. This usually involves just a dumbbell.

I’ve been doing many of these workouts in addition to my lifting regimen, and I can say that I am thoroughly getting my ass kicked.

Dumbbells are a challenge in and of themselves. You have to manipulate them differently, and they will most definitely catch up to you.

When I first started a couple of years ago, every time I’d be extremely sore. Now, I just get beat by them. I am coming to enjoy dumbbells. They are a great break from the barbell that’s for sure.

So with the coronavirus raging, get a set of dumbbells and stay fit. You will come to like them and be good at them. Just another tool in your wheelhouse you’ll have when you need it.

My Goal: Beat Myself Up During Coronavirus Outbreak

I’ve just decided if I can’t do anything, go anywhere, or engage in normal, human social behavior, I might as well beat myself up with CrossFit. After all, I don’t have anything to go do that I should avoid soreness for.

Thus, every day, I get up trying to beat the shit out of myself. Thrusters, wall balls, lunges, long runs, bike rides, and dumbbells galore.

Why not?

What else do I have to do?

Top 5 At-Home Workout Tips

WORKING OUT AT HOME

For those of you who are just beginning to work out at home, here are some tips to help you:

  • Just start. It will be hard at first, but once you start moving, you’ll get into a rhythm.
  • Use what you have. If all you have is your body, you can do a lot of workouts: run, push ups, air squats, pistols, etc. If you have a jump rope or a dumbbell, use those. Improvise.
  • Keep it consistent. You will be more likely to stick to a workout routine when it is a routine. If you were going to the gym every day, continue to work out at that same time.
  • Find an online workout community. Many gyms are using apps such as SugarWOD and others to ensure their members are staying connected. They are programming at-home workouts so you can check in with others regularly. Take advantage of these.
  • Don’t be discouraged. This, too, shall pass.

My At-Home Gym Is the Only Thing Keeping Me Sane

If I didn’t have an at-home gym, I think I would be going insane right now. It’s the only thing keeping me sane in the midst of this insanity.

It’s my stress relief and keeps me motivated to keep pushing through these days.

I know these days will only make me stronger, but when you’re in the midst of it, it doesn’t seem like it.

One day at a time, you keep pushing, keep moving, never giving in.

At-Home Workouts Will Make You Stronger

There are two ways you can approach this stupid-ass virus: you can give in to it, bemoan your fate and what is happening in the world, or you can grow stronger from it, beat it, and not give in.

Many people have told me, “I can’t work out at home” when I tell them I work out at home. This is because they need others to motivate them.

Now, most of us are forced to workout at home.

You have two options:

  1. To not workout due to every excuse under the sun
  2. To workout and continue to be healthy and stay fit

You Will Grow Stronger By Working Out At Home

Mentally

You will grow in mental ways you never thought possible. There will be days when you will be dragging and hating every second of it (I’ve been there and still am there). You have to push through it, half-ass it if you have too since half-assing is better than sitting on your ass. You will gain a mental fortitude you never thought possible.

Spiritually

As you are running in the dark, in the rain, in the cold, hating every miserable second of it, wishing for Orange Theory’s nice treadmills and warm room, you will grow spiritually. It will just be you, nature, the birds, animals, and your own thoughts, along with God. You will gain insight into your life, and your workout will be over before you know it.

Physically

You will most likely be doing a lot of moves you otherwise wouldn’t do. There’s nothing like bodyweight exercises to whip you into shape. You will grow physically, even if you don’t have a barbell.

Emotionally

Many of us workout because it makes us feel good, it relieves stress, and we like how we look because of it. Continuing to workout will help you combat the negativity of the coronavirus and weather this storm like any other storm in your life.

Financially

You’re not paying for a gym membership, nor are you driving there and back and having to buy nice clothes for it either.

Community

Your community is your family now. Show them that the coronavirus is not stopping you from your dreams, goals, and aspirations. Teach them that you are stronger than this, and that God is in control. Go on a run with your daughter; do a CrossFit workout with your other daughter; play catch with your son. Be active, and your kids will grow up active.

You will grow stronger with at-home workouts. Still, the choice is yours.
