The Key to Longevity in CrossFit

After four years of doing CrossFit, I’ve learned a lot of things, including what I can’t do and what I can do, as well as what I shouldn’t do.

The main key to longevity at CrossFit is doing what you can do, and that’s it.

This means if you are injured and one move exacerbates your injury, don’t do it! Even it it’s programmed in a CrossFit WOD or a CrossFit competition. You’re allowed to scale.

Scaling in CrossFit

Furthermore, it’s okay to do your own thing. You know what you need to work on, so just because a move is programmed doesn’t mean you have to do it. Too many of us are followers at times.

Even at a CrossFit competition.

At my last CrossFit competition, chest to bar pull ups were programmed from a dead hang. I can’t do 21 chest to bar pull ups from a dead hang, so I told the judge I was just going to do pull ups. She told me, “Well, I can’t let you move on until you do them.”

I looked at her and said, “That’s okay. I’ll move on without you then.”

And that’s what I did. And she moved on with me. What else was she going to do? Stand there by herself? I was in last place. It didn’t matter.

My point is do what you feel you can do in that moment on that day and who cares what everyone else is doing. If you push yourself to do moves you can’t do or that you are too tired to do, you will only injure yourself and thus will stall your CrossFit workouts.

And if you’re not careful, that vicious cycle can continue, leaving you frustrated and apt to quit CrossFit.

Listen to your body. It’s your workout. Your needs. And on one else’s.

CrossFit Spirit Animal

Today I was called a spirit animal in CrossFit.

This is the second time I’ve heard this in recent months.

It’s strange because I’ve often felt like I don’t belong anywhere I go. Mainly because I don’t make the effort. For the most part, I don’t care what others think of me. I don’t make an effort to be friends with others. Frankly, I do my own thing.

Like today. I did my own WOD — changed it to what I needed it to be. Perhaps this is why I was called a spirit animal.

Yet, I feel like this attitude hurts me — especially when it comes to CrossFit competitions. I’ve never been asked to be someone else’s partner. This sucks. I’ve probably done a dozen CrossFit competitions with people I don’t know. Some of the other CrossFit competitions I have started to drag my daughter along to be my partner.

Even the current CrossFit box I’m a member of won’t ask me to do a CrossFit competition. And when I try to find partners, I feel like I beg and plead, or I’m flat out turned down and told to “fuck off.” Usually, this doesn’t bother me, but the last time I got turned down, I have to admit it hurt.

Let’s face it, all CrossFit competitions are dopey. They are just a bunch of workouts thrown together that you do — which truly don’t matter. What matters is who you do them with.

The last CrossFit competition I got turned down when I asked was by a friend of mine. I’ve asked him several times to do a CrossFit competition with me. He has said no each time. Usually, I let it go. But this time, I’m finding it incredibly difficult to do so.

I asked him why, and all I got was a lame excuse. I think he thinks that I suck. Fair enough. But just tell me that. Yes, I was hurt (and truth be told, I still am), but I still want to do a CrossFit competition with him — one day.

I don’t know why I’m wasting my time lamenting. Nothing will change (does it ever?), so what’s the point?

CrossFit Competition: Sadistic Pain

As much as I complain about the pain and the bruises, secretly I love feeling this sore. I call it sadistic pain or sadistic soreness. It signifies that I’ve worked hard enough to get a response from my muscles, which doesn’t happen every day.

CrossFit Competitions are guaranteed to get you sore, due to the fact of the work performed in such a short amount of time.

While it sucks not to be able to walk very well or lift your arms very high, there’s something about the pain that is extremely satisfying…

CrossFit Competition: Being Physically Exhausted

Doing three workouts in one day is taxing. Right now, I’m beat, but I’m trying to stay awake so I don’t wake up at 2 am tomorrow morning wide awake.

I just finished Day 1 of a two-day CrossFit competition, called the Turkey Challenge in Superior, CO.

Every time I sign up for a CrossFit competition, I think it’s a good idea at the time, and then I do it, and when I can’t walk, I think Well, that was a dumb idea!

I am currently thinking this was a dumb idea for the following reasons:

  • I can’t walk
  • I have a huge bruise on my left forearm from kettlebell snatches (which is why I never do them).
  • I have a nice chafed raw spot on my back from wearing a rucksack during a 1.5 mile run.
  • Did I mention I can’t walk?

I have another whole day of this.

I’m getting too old for this stuff.

CrossFit Competition: Project Uplift 5.0

Yesterday, I had a CrossFit Competition in Fort Collins at the Madwire building. Project UpLift 5.0 benefits Kids at Heart, a non-profit that supports foster and adoptive families. This was my third year in a row participating and the first time I actually got a team together since usually I don’t have a team and end up as a fill-in with people I don’t know.

This one was fun, but I had reinjured my thumb the night beforehand doing snatches for another online competition I’m doing (The Turkey Challenge qualifier) that was just irksome and troublesome. My thumb hurt for most of the competition, but luckily there was no heavy lifting involved.

Overall, it was fun. It was a different vibe this year than the previous years. Normally, it was held at Whole Foods parking lot, but I think it has gotten too big for that. They had kids’ activities and a bouncy house, but my kids didn’t have as much fun as in previous years.

Overall, an okay day. I gotta get my injury healed…

When You’re Not Feeling CrossFit…

Yesterday, I had a CrossFit competition that was local. I was just not feeling it. I skipped the floater because I’m battling injuries already and truly don’t think I can handle any more. The floater was with heavy weight. And then, in the only CrossFit WOD I had fun in, I ripped my hand, which always sucks. God, I hate kipping. Every time I kip chest-to-bar pull-ups, this crap happens.

Needless to say, I should have skipped this one altogether.

CrossFit Competition: Whiteboard Classic

Yesterday, I did the CrossFit competition called the Whiteboard Classic in Arvada, CO. I did this one last year as well. This year, I entered the scaled division because my daughter was my partner.

Let’s just say I did 85% of the work in a CrossFit competition designed for two people. My quads today are burning. It’s hard to walk and sit. I feel old.

CROSSFIT ARVADA

It was hot, but the venue was good.  In-between heats, I sat in my truck the entire time and worked on my computer. We left after the last WOD where I was beginning to feel the work I had done:

  • 60 back squats at 75 pounds
  • 19 cleans at 75 pounds
  • 51 thrusters, 42 at 65, 9 at 75 pounds
  • 60 pull ups
  • 80 wall balls
  • A bunch of calories on the bike and the Assault runner
  • Burpee box jump overs

I love my daughter, but she has to stick to the teens division.

It was fun but exhausting, and I was physically drained. I went to bed at 7 pm.

CrossFit: DOMS is Real

DOMS or delayed onset muscle soreness is real. DOMS is the soreness felt after working out, and it usually sets in 24 to 72 hours after your workout. No one is sure exactly what causes DOMS, except for the fact that you’re injured your muscles and they are repairing (which is how you get stronger).

Today, I feel worse than yesterday after my three-day CrossFit competition over the weekend. My lats, my core, and my arms mainly. My legs were sore at the beginning of the competition, but the last two days of the CrossFit competition were arm-heavy exercises, and I’m definitely feeling it.

The thing with DOMS is you just have to endure it; there’s not much you can do to help it. It hurt to sneeze yesterday, and I couldn’t scratch my back. We’ll see how today goes.

CrossFit Competition: Arcanum Mile High Games

This weekend, my daughter and I embarked on a three-day CrossFit competition in Glendale, CO. It was the Arcanum Games, and let’s just say it was an experience. First off, we had the weather to contend with. It was cold, rainy, and with lightning and thunder, there were multiple rain delays. Hence, some of the workouts were changed to accommodate the weather.

Overall, it was a good competition. Working out at a CrossFit competition in the pouring rain was definitely an experience. Beside the fact I probably won’t be able to walk on Monday, it was fun.

Some highlights of the CrossFit Competition Arcanum Games:

  • I did 15 OHS at 95 lbs.
  • I ran on a TrueForm runner.
  • I worked out in the rain.
  • I lifted in a firehouse.
  • I handstand walked over 50 feet.

A three-day CrossFit competition definitely takes its toll. The third day you just showed up and did the workouts. You’re sore, tired, and mentally drained. There’s really no thought behind it.

CrossFit: Benchmarks Tell You a Lot

This entire year (2019) has mainly been a battle against my body. Tweaks here and there. Days off from training. Avoiding certain exercises. The things you don’t like about training.

There have been a few bright spots here and there. I’ve PR’ed (set a personal record) for my bench press.  I PR’ed my thruster in a CrossFit competition.

And then today I PR’ed CrossFit girl workout Grace.

CROSSFIT BENCHMARK GRACE

CrossFit benchmark workout Grace is pretty straightforward: 30 clean and jerks at 95 lbs for women for time.

It’s been almost a year since I’ve done Grace, and I knew I’d PR it, mainly because I know I’m stronger.

WHEN YOU’RE IN A RUT, DO A CROSSFIT BENCHMARK WOD

It can be hard after you’ve been doing CrossFit a while to keep going, to keep progressing, to keep getting stronger and fitter. It can be REAL hard. There are days I don’t want to get out of bed and workout. Workouts I look at I don’t want to do. Days I wonder why I do this.

In those moments, you need a win. Today was my win. I’m unsure how long my win will propel me forward. But it doesn’t matter — at this point, I’ll take anything.
