Weekend Warrior

Yesterday, I did another CrossFit competition. It was a partner comp with one male and one female. This one was local, held at Official Fitness in Windsor, CO.

Like most CrossFit competitions, this one had 3 workouts and a floater and a final if you made it. We finished in fourth place by just a hair.

My partner, Alex, and I make a great team.  Our strengths and weaknesses complement each other and it’s always fun to work out with someone who 1) pushes you and 2) wants to win as much as you do!  The great thing about partner workouts is you work harder so you don’t let the other one down!  I definitely did, and I know he did as well!

It was a great time. The day was bright and sunny. My kids were able to come and watch because it was so close to our house.  The other competitors were amazing athletes.  Official Fitness was a welcoming, warm box.  Hanging out with other athletes is always inspiring.

In addition, I added more bruises to yesterday’s.  It was a great warm-up to the Open (which is happening in 5 days and I’m not ready!!!).  And I was blessed to spend time with some of my favorites athletes from my own box, CrossFit Endure!  Thanks for cheering us on guys!

One Week Till the Open…And I’m Getting Anxious…

I usually get anxious right before competitions.

But a week before?

I’ve spent the last year preparing for the Open.  One whole year of my life.

I’m stronger.  I’ve improved all my skills.  I’ve added new ones.

But I don’t have all the skills.  Nor all the strength.

And that worries me.

All it takes is one move to show up that

1) I either don’t have or

2) I suck at

And everything I’ve worked so hard for is thrown out the window.

My body has tweaks here and there.  My right fingers are swollen.  My right calf is tight.  My massage guy is sick.  My muscle activation lady is sick.  I know my glutes are tight.  I am bruised from Jason.

I remind myself that I choose this.

Why?

Because it gives me something to cling to when there’s nothing else in my world to cling to.  It’s the constant and the rock in my life when all else is a storm.  It’s something to strive for.  To achieve.  And to keep achieving.

It’s a passion.  And passion is so rare in life that when you find it, you cling to it with everything you’ve got.  You don’t give up.  No matter the pain.  The frustrations.  The defeats.  You keep going.  One step at a time.  With the belief great things will be achieved…

2018 CrossFit Judges Course

Every year in order to judge CrossFit athletes at all levels you have to take CrossFit’s judges course.  It’s an online course with modules that teach you correct movement standards, competition faults, and aids in counting reps of movements.  The movements involve squats, presses, pulling, hanging, and other miscellaneous movements.  It costs $10.

Having just finished it, I would say it gets easier with time as a coach, but it’s still tricky enough that you need at least an hour or probably closer to two to make it through the course in one sitting.

Counting others’ double unders takes much practice and if you’re rusty, now’s the time to start practicing.  You also get the chance to catch others’ mistakes.

I love doing this course because inevitably you always learn something or remember a nuance you forgot.  Plus, every year it changes based off of what you’ll probably see in the Open so it’s a great aid in guessing the workouts.

Even if you don’t plan to judge, this is a great review and one not to be missed!

Happy learning!!

I’m Not Ready for the Open…

I hit the gym and did my own workout.

Dumbbell thrusters and dumbbell push press.

Oh.  My.  God.

It was hard.

I haven’t done dumbbell thrusters since September.  We don’t have enough equipment so my gym never programs them.

I have to practice these.  At least once a week I’ve realized.

My friend mentioned I should strive for Regionals.  I have all the skills.  The strength.  The stamina.

What I don’t have though matters:

Handstand walkscrossfit-girls-dumbbell-snatch

Ring muscle ups

Dumbbell proficiency.

I’ve realized in the past few days there’s a lot I have to work on.

Being a Games athlete is a full-time job.

I’m just not sure I want CrossFit to be it.

Something to think about and pray about…

Learning to Walk Again…

Practicing handstand walks is learning to walk again.  It’s all about balance and—wait for it–practice.

Skill work in CrossFit is time consuming.  And it can get frustrating.

Double unders.  Took me 2 years to finally be able to do 100 unbroken almost every time.  And this is practicing every day for 6 months in the beginning.

Handstand push-ups.  Some of this is strength but mostly it’s about learning to be upside down as well.

Rope climbs.  Similar to handstand push-ups.  Mostly skill with wrapping your feet on the rope.

Multiple toes to bar.  This is a skill that takes practice to master the momentum swing.

Currently, I’m much better at finding my balance, kicking up into a handstand without the wall, and taking two-three steps.  It’s the being upside down longer and keeping balance longer.

And that will take practice.  And time.

And time before the Open is running out…

Open Letter to Dave Castro…

2017rcf_regionals__east_day1_event1_team_jsp-10-696x464

Dear Mr. Castro,

I have an idea for 18.1.  And I’m sure I’m not the only one.  I was wondering if you’d consider running a contest to let CrossFitters submit ideas for Open workouts and then choose one.  What better way to promote the sport of CrossFit, generate more interest in the Open, and get everyone excited, involved, and have ownership in the sport.

Picture it now:  You do the Open announcement at the box of the winner.  You choose one athlete from the box to go against a Games athlete.  What a dream come true for us average CrossFitters who will never get a chance to compete in the Games!  It would be something I know I’d never forget.  What a cherished memory!

This could be huge!  I know, it’s more work.  I get that.  Still, what do you think?  Could we give it a go?  After all, you’ll never know unless you try.  And not knowing is worse than failing.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Jen Dionne

My Road to the Open…

Week One of the Open begins February 22nd for 18.1.

I have a throwdown on January 21st and a competition on February 17th.

Between now and then I’m going to be working hard on my handstand walks and gaining strength.  And in the immediate future getting well and getting over my cough.

I swam today for the first time in a long time and coughed a lot but made it through.

Every week I plan to update here my progress.  And my scores for the Open.

Let’s make this the best Open ever!
