CrossFit: Doing Handstands in a Pumpkin Patch

Does heaven on earth get any better than handstands in a pumpkin patch?

CrossFit Competition: Project Uplift 5.0

Yesterday, I had a CrossFit Competition in Fort Collins at the Madwire building. Project UpLift 5.0 benefits Kids at Heart, a non-profit that supports foster and adoptive families. This was my third year in a row participating and the first time I actually got a team together since usually I don’t have a team and end up as a fill-in with people I don’t know.

This one was fun, but I had reinjured my thumb the night beforehand doing snatches for another online competition I’m doing (The Turkey Challenge qualifier) that was just irksome and troublesome. My thumb hurt for most of the competition, but luckily there was no heavy lifting involved.

Overall, it was fun. It was a different vibe this year than the previous years. Normally, it was held at Whole Foods parking lot, but I think it has gotten too big for that. They had kids’ activities and a bouncy house, but my kids didn’t have as much fun as in previous years.

Overall, an okay day. I gotta get my injury healed…

CrossFit Competitions: Two in One Weekend

I don’t normally do two CrossFit competitions in one weekend, but one came up that I did last year that I wanted to do again, and I had already signed up for a different one, so I did both.

The first one, Rocky Mountain Showdown at CrossFit DNR in Fort Collins was fun. We made it to the semi-finals, but it’s hard when you’re knocked out by a 19-year-old.

The second one, Battle at the Rock at CrossFit Castle Rock, I did last year. This year was just as fun. I came in third here.

Some highlights from this past weekend:

  • I ran a 7-minute mile flat. I haven’t done that in forever.
  • I clean and jerked 125 lb, the most I’ve done since my thumb injury.

As most of you know, I have been battling some type of injury most of this year. I still have my thumb injury that is taking forever to heal. Currently, I have a lung inflammation (at least that was what I was told last week). Now, I’m on meds for a lung infection. So I worked out all weekend sick.

Part of it is/was dumb.

But it makes me wonder what I can do if I’m ever 100% well again.

CrossFit: I Still Have It…

As most of you know, I’ve been battling injuries all year. My thumb is still not healed (could be six months from what I’ve read online), and now I caught the first of the school year cold, which has morphed into a coughing frenzy. I went to the doctor yesterday for some drugs, so hopefully that will kick this damn thing to the curb.

I CAN STILL KICK ASS IN CROSSFIT

For the last year or so, I’ve also struggled with CrossFit workouts. Most of the time, I’m only going half-speed and just trying to get through it from a mental perspective. Yesterday, I did one of my all time favorite workouts from the Open, CrossFit Open 17.5, which is:

10 rounds for time of:

  • 9 thrusters 65 lbs
  • 35 double unders

When I did this back in 2017, I held the best time for women at my box. I love thrusters and double unders. So I was excited for this one, but realistic. I’m sick, and my thumb is screwed up.

However, I beat my time by almost two whole minutes! It was cool to see that when I want it, it’s still there — even if I’m not 100%.

CrossFit: Doing What You Can

When you’re injured, it affects you both physically and mentally.

At this point, I’m doing what I can with CrossFit.

Trying to stay active, but be cautious about it. And trying to keep my mental game in check since some days it’s all I can do to get up and move.

I gotta be happy with that.

CrossFit Hero Wods: 31 Heroes

31 Heroes CrossFit WOD honors the 31 military heroes who died Aug 6th, 2011 in Afghanistan.

The CrossFit workout is:

AMRAP 31:

  • 8 thrusters 105 lbs
  • 6 rope climbs
  • 11 box jumps 24 inches

With a partner. One partner works while the other does a 400 m sandbag run of 35 lbs. Then you switch.

This is a fundraiser to help the families of the fallen heroes and many others. 31 Heroes was fun but hard. The run was harder than I thought it would be. Thrusters weren’t bad although I re-injured my thumb on them. Great cause so donate now!

When You’re Not Feeling CrossFit…

Yesterday, I had a CrossFit competition that was local. I was just not feeling it. I skipped the floater because I’m battling injuries already and truly don’t think I can handle any more. The floater was with heavy weight. And then, in the only CrossFit WOD I had fun in, I ripped my hand, which always sucks. God, I hate kipping. Every time I kip chest-to-bar pull-ups, this crap happens.

Needless to say, I should have skipped this one altogether.

Dealing with Injuries…Again

Here I go…again.

I’m injured. Unsure how. My doctor thinks I banged my thumb. Either way, I have strained a ligament in my thumb. It just looks weird; it doesn’t hurt. Still, it sucks. I’m avoiding lifting heavy. I just want to be injury free.

God…

CrossFit Competition: Whiteboard Classic

Yesterday, I did the CrossFit competition called the Whiteboard Classic in Arvada, CO. I did this one last year as well. This year, I entered the scaled division because my daughter was my partner.

Let’s just say I did 85% of the work in a CrossFit competition designed for two people. My quads today are burning. It’s hard to walk and sit. I feel old.

CROSSFIT ARVADA

It was hot, but the venue was good.  In-between heats, I sat in my truck the entire time and worked on my computer. We left after the last WOD where I was beginning to feel the work I had done:

  • 60 back squats at 75 pounds
  • 19 cleans at 75 pounds
  • 51 thrusters, 42 at 65, 9 at 75 pounds
  • 60 pull ups
  • 80 wall balls
  • A bunch of calories on the bike and the Assault runner
  • Burpee box jump overs

I love my daughter, but she has to stick to the teens division.

It was fun but exhausting, and I was physically drained. I went to bed at 7 pm.

Spartan Race Fort Carson

For my daughter’s 14th birthday, she wanted to run a Spartan race. Reluctantly, I agreed. I had done the Tough Mudder two years ago and didn’t like it. I was cold and wet the entire time, which made it miserable. So, I wasn’t looking forward to this one at all.

We signed up for the age group times so we could run in the morning and avoid the heat. However, avoiding the heat was impossible this go around as it was hot the entire time. We had to start at different times as well so I had to wait 15 minutes for my daughter’s group to begin. I picked grass. Fun times.

Spartan Race Fort Carson Review

Once we got going it was just hot. There were a lot of ups and down mountainsides for no apparent reason except to make us go up and down.

Furthermore, this was more of a race to avoid cactus than anything else. Cactus were everywhere, and I happen to have an affinity for cactus so hated seeing all of the cactus that got smashed by runners.

The obstacles were fine, but with only one that involved water, it was hot. We stopped at least three times to re-apply sunscreen, and we stopped at every water station to replenish our bottles and hydrate.

My overall impression was this: this was a glorified, 8.5 mile mountain hike with some obstacles thrown in. Granted, it was on Fort Carson military base, which was pretty cool. We got to see some of their training buildings. However, it was much like a mountain hike/run anywhere on the Front Range of Colorado.

My daughter had fun. I could have done without so many hills. The heat could have gotten lost for all I cared. There was also a false ending, where you went up to the finish line, but still had to go back down 1.5 miles. That sucked.

I may do one again. It just depends. I told my daughter the Tough Mudder would be more her style because it’s a lot more mud and water. Only time will tell.
